As The Raven Flies by sidneyeileen As The Raven Flies by sidneyeileen
Oil paint on canvas board 8"x16"
Two sittings
Reference: [link] by ~stockmichelle

Yay for decent brushes! I was able to finish the second wing and the tail with the level of detail I had expected to accomplish in the initial sitting. Because the upper wing was already painted in, I used medium to create layering and clean up the lines. The rest of the bird was painted by laying down the black paint for the background, and then adding white paint and mixing directly on the canvas. If it hadn't been for the issue with the brushes, this painting could have been done in one sitting.

lol it doesn't look finished to me, but it's nicely done, very nice shading and effect on the black paper!

This is so beautiful. It's minimal, the vast darkness the raven's soaring through helps to give it a good balance and some immense depths. Gorgeous painting of the bird.

The detail on the feathers looks really amazing.

I really love how you use negative space and leave plenty of extra room on the canvas instead of just cropping it out like everyone else seems to do... It really gives it a whole new level of thoughtfulness and depth. :}

Thanks. :aww: On these subject-only pieces I feel that creating a feeling of space helps to finish the artwork and make it feel complete, as opposed to just a study or sketch.

*nod* I agree. It makes it look more alive, too, and less like a simple picture of something.

My goodness, I thought this was a photograph at first. Your talent with black paper is astounding - as usual - and I continue to envy that. I struggle a lot with making black paper look black after it's been scanned. :(

Thanks! This is actually a painting, though. It's a lot easier to get the contrast right photographing the paint than it ever has been with the paper, just because I'm not struggling with the texture showing up as gray. If I take the photo with the canvas at an angle to the light where I don't get light reflection, it's all good. However, it's not a high enough resolution for anything other than online digital. I could never make prints from the photos.

Quite welcome!

Aha, that makes sense. Wow, that's both a good idea and gives me more respect for you. Painting can be tricky, I've found, for getting really specific details.

I absolutely love this! The detail in the feathers is amazing, I especially like that even though the left wing is not as detailed you can still see the curve of the wing. I like the tail feathers as well. I really like this style, I want to try it sometime :)
