After months of thinking about it, I finally went out and bought myself the full set of Prismacolor watercolor pencils. This is the second piece I tried to do with them, and I think it turned out fairly decent. The watercolor made it much faster to lay the base colors, but I had a bit of trouble getting them exactly where I wanted them. It was also a bit strange to work with the texture the pencil marks left, even after water was applied.

I added a bit of colored pencil to help darken the shadows on the bird, particularly around the wings, and to adjust a bit of the coloring on the highlighting.

After receiving feedback on my first upload of this painting [link] , I tried to lighten the chick's shadow. That didn't work very well, so instead I darkened the shadows on the chick so the dark shadow might make more sense. I also added some more details to the feathers and fluff, and the scatter of birdseed.
