9"x12", colored pencil on black paper
6 hours of work
Model: an Australian raven [link] courtesy of ~kat013

Continuing the Corvid series. :aww:

Edit: I added a little bit more lighting on the head to help define the shape a bit more. I'm still considering adding some backlighting to fully define the shape of the head.

Edit Again: I attempted adding the bird's left eye, but it just looked odd. I also attempted adding some backlighting, but that entirely destroyed the etherial effect of the drawing, so I erased it. Finally, I added a bit more lighting along the top of the head, to define the tilt and give more sense of scale to the beak. I will not be making further changes to this drawing. I still encourage feedback, as it may help with future pieces, and many thanks to those who provided feedback on this piece.

The minimalist approach to the hear makes it look like the raven's head is a bit odd. ALmost like it's too small for its body. But I can almost pick out the invisible lines with my mind and I love how you did the sheen on the feathers. =)
Your black paper work is always amazing and the animals stand out strongly. Another fave.

Thank you very much for the honest feedback. I was slightly concerned about that when I finished it last night, and was considering adding some backlighting along the right side to define the silhouette. I think it also might work to add some more highlighting on the head which wasn't there in the photo. I'm not sure...
I added a little more lighting on the head, but I'm not sure it solved the problem. What do you think?
Yeah, I was going to suggest backlight...but couldn't figure out how to put it in.
Maybe if you put in a shadowed eye for the other half of the face? Which does exist in the photo. Maybe it will define the other side a bit more, too... The lighting on the head makes it a lot better, though. =)
Whoah, you're amazing!!!

Just my very inexpert opinion, but I think your idea of more backlighting is a good one. At the moment, it kind of looks cut off. I love the light on the wing, though.
