~16 hours of work Photos provided by ~RedDrgn Commission for ~RedDrgn of her three cats, Tempest, Eclipse, and Orion (left to right) After RedDrgn commissioned this composite portrait, she sent me a half-dozen pictures of each cat, and if it wasn't for her labels I would have been very hard-pressed to tell which cat was which. Now, after finishing the portrait, they look as distinct as if they had different coloring. RedDrgn emphasized that she was counting on me to be able to accurately draw each of them as the individuals they are, so to that end I chose three pictures with the most similar viewpoint. That way I would be forced to find all the details of each cat, and depict them accurately. I printed out the three photos on a single piece of paper and set it on my desk for a week. I wanted the lighting to match in the portrait, and I liked the lighting on the photo of Eclipse, so during that week I carefully considered the individual features of each cat, and how to apply the lighting from the one photo onto the cats in the other two photos. I hope I did them justice. This project has been a delightful challenge, and I thank RedDrgn for giving me the opportunity to draw her three beautiful kitties. I can still make some small changes to the drawing at this time, particularly if any of the colored areas need adjustment. Demonstration showing the reference photos and all the WIPs: [link] Comments

  I'm still debating. The three possibilities that I like best so far are Stark Realism, Distilled Realism, and Phantom Realism. In the next couple weeks I'll probably post another poll with those options and any other good ones that come to mind - see what everyone else thinks since I can't decide which I like best. haha they look so alike!

 glad to see this beautiful painting done. Very well done my freind. -- IN ORDER TO DRAW BETTER, LEARN TO SEE BETTER  Those 16 hrs. were well worth it! I love how you can tell each cat apart. That takes tons of skill. Great job!

The first one on the screen right has such a sweet softness in the eyes and expression (reminds me of my Venus).
The middle cat has that curious loving look, protecting yet ready to rub against your hand or ankle,(reminds me of my Valleboy). The third kitty has a look of seriousness, like you better have a good reason to interupt me (both Venus & Valle give me that look) Your welcome to see them in my journal and you will see what I mean.  They definitely are individuals and I think you capture that quite nicely.  That is so amazing, you are a really skilled artist. You can tell that they all have different personalities. It just looks so perfect and realistic, you did an incredible job on this!  |
