Seriously, I've been chatting with *AussieMum, and we were thinking about starting some sort of informal network or club for trading art supplies internationally. Every country has their own art supply brands which are easily obtained, probably pretty darned neat, and not necessarily available in other countries. Most of these can be ordered online, but sometimes the quantities are prohibitive unless a person knows for certain that they like the brand and will be using it A LOT.
Right now, I want to look at the pros and cons of setting up a public club (although probably not until after v.6 dA rolls out, just in case there is actual support for group accounts), vs. just an informal network of invited artists. I believe a club would have more opportunities for trading interesting stuff because of more people, but there will also be a greater likelihood of people ending up cheated and not receiving goods they were promised.
If we organize this as a club, then I will not want money changing hands to be the primary motivation. There is too much opportunity for thievery, dishonesty, or just bad feelings if someone takes too long sending stuff that is paid for.
I would like to propose a very general grouping of item value (Low for a dozen pencils or a pad of paper. Med for a couple full tubes of paint or expensive fancy paper. High for large sets of supplies or expensive materials, especially if they will be expensive or difficult to ship.). A person must offer something into the pot in order to be able to request an item from the same pot. It can be something the person has and no longer wants, or it can be something new that they are willing to buy, as long as that is clear in the description. If someone is interested in a particular item, they can also request that item in case someone is willing to offer it.
Feel free to invite anyone into this discussion who might be interested. If this group is kept private, I will probably conduct it from this forum, or possibly create a Yahoo group for it.
One thing I also hope to see from this group is a discussion of exactly what brands and kinds of supplies are available in different regions, and what their different qualities are.
